A Christian is not merely someone who believes certain facts about Jesus, but someone united to Him through faith, repentance, baptism, and the Holy Spirit, who is being transformed into His likeness through a life of love, obedience, and faithful discipleship.
The New Testament presents several connected dimensions of what a Christian is:
1. A Christian Believes in Jesus Christ
A Christian believes that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, Lord, Savior, and risen King.
“Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.” — First Epistle of John 5:1
“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” — Epistle to the Romans 10:9
This faith is not merely intellectual agreement; it is trust, surrender, and allegiance.
2. A Christian Repents
The New Testament consistently connects becoming a Christian with repentance — turning away from sin and turning toward God.
“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.” — Acts of the Apostles 2:38
“God… now commands all men everywhere to repent.” — Acts of the Apostles 17:30
Repentance is not perfection, but a changed direction of life.
3. A Christian Is Born Again
Jesus taught that entering the Kingdom requires spiritual rebirth.
“Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” — The Gospel of John 3:3
This new birth is the work of the Spirit, creating a new inner life.
4. A Christian Receives the Holy Spirit
The Spirit of God dwelling in a person is central to New Testament Christianity.
“If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.” — Epistle to the Romans 8:9
The Spirit empowers holiness, prayer, love, truth, and transformation.
5. A Christian Follows Jesus as Lord
The New Testament definition is deeply discipleship-oriented.
Jesus repeatedly said:
“Follow Me.”
A Christian is therefore not simply an admirer of Jesus, but a disciple who seeks to obey Him.
“Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” — The Gospel of Luke 6:46
6. A Christian Loves
Love is presented as one of the clearest evidences of genuine Christianity.
“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” — The Gospel of John 13:35
“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” — First Epistle of John 4:8
This includes forgiveness, humility, mercy, patience, and sacrificial love.
7. A Christian Is Being Transformed
The New Testament does not portray salvation as merely a legal status; it also describes an ongoing transformation into Christlikeness.
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Epistle to the Romans 12:2
“We all… are being transformed into the same image.” — Second Epistle to the Corinthians 3:18
Christians still struggle and fall at times, but their direction is toward holiness, not toward embracing sin.
8. A Christian Endures
The New Testament repeatedly emphasizes perseverance.
“He who endures to the end shall be saved.” — The Gospel of Matthew 24:13
Christianity is presented as a lifelong walk, race, battle, and pilgrimage.
A Christian is a person who believes in and follows Jesus Christ, repents of sin, is baptized into Him, is born again by the Holy Spirit, and becomes united to Christ through faith. Christianity is not merely intellectual belief, but a living relationship with Christ that transforms the whole person. A Christian lives as a disciple marked by love, obedience, holiness, perseverance, and continual transformation into the likeness of Christ, enduring faithfully to the end through the power of the Holy Spirit.
